Standing with Mwea's rice farmers
A Mwea farmer should be able to plant with confidence, access enough water, protect the crop, transport the harvest easily and sell it at a fair price.
Rice farming is the backbone of Mwea’s economy. When our farmers succeed, our entire constituency benefits. Bernard’s four priorities for rice farmers:
- Reliable irrigation water: lobby for more and steadier water for the Mwea Irrigation Scheme, including from Thiba Dam, so every farmer has fair access.
- A protected market for Mwea rice: push in Parliament for policies that protect local farmers from unfair competition from imports.
- Better farm-to-market roads: work with the National Irrigation Authority and other agencies to fix on-farm and feeder roads.
- A lasting solution to the snail menace: research, technical support and an affordable, environmentally responsible control programme.
